Frida Kahlo was a prolific self-portraitist, using the canvas as a mirror through all stages of her turbulent and, at times, tragic life. We might think we already know her the image of floral crowns, big brows and folk style clothing have made her a muse to generations but what lies beneath the surface of this intensely passionate woman? This is a highly researched and visually spectacular feature-length film on this 21st-century female icon, filmed extensively in Mexico, the USA and Europe. It was made in collaboration with those who knew Frida Kahlo and have both studied and curated her work.

Set in1950s India, just after independence from Britain, this is a compelling portrait of a woman''s struggle for fulfilment in a society pivoting between the traditional and the modern. Escaping from an abusive marriage, Lakshmi makes her way to the pink city of Jaipur where she becomes a renowned henna artist and a confidante to wealthy women of the upper class. Her quest for a new life is threatened by the appearance of her husband and a sister she had never known. A vivid story about freedom and independence, packed with interesting details about Indian culture at the time. A second book will be selected for discussion later in the term.
