The Dickens Boy, by Thomas Kenneally, is a compassionate and humorous work of historical fiction. Concerned that two of his under-achieving sons may tarnish his reputation at home, Charles Dickens sends them off to the New South Wales outback rather than have them 'waste' their lives in London. The story reimagines the life of Dickens' tenth son, known as 'Plorn'. Sent to a remote NSW station to learn how to become a gentleman stockman, Plorn meets extraordinary people and has wonderful adventures as he works to prove himself. Amazingly he had never read a word his father had written!
