The shogun, or Japans hereditary commander-in-chief, was the real ruler of Japan until feudalism was abolished in 1867. The shogun capital was Edo, a sleepy little town that gradually transformed into a political city known from 1868 as Tokyo. Takeshi takes us on a street view of old Tokyo as drawn by artists of the 1800s and offers glimpse into the culture and society of the time.
