Why are scandals in the arts so newsworthy? Whether it’s a fake or a theft, an offensive nude or a piece of incomprehensible sculpture, everyone gets involved, everyone has an opinion and the risk-takers, ratbags and rogues behind the latest scandal become celebrities. Is it because we’re all interested in the arts and the lives of artists, or is there something below the surface that brings important social and political issues into play?

Although China is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases and pollution, it has invested more in renewable energy than any other country and is making real efforts to address the effects of rapid industrialisation. Mark Beeson, International Politics at UWA, suggests that while China's authoritarian leaders may be able to manage the expectations of its own people in this regard their policies may be an obstacle to those of the so-called international community.

He has tightened restrictions on civil society and ideological discourse, and China’s overseas aid is transforming much of the developing world. Xi has had a cult of personality constructed around himself, involving books, cartoons, pop songs and even dance routines. Gary Sigley is a professional scholar focusing on China’s cultural and social transformation, and discusses what all this means for ‘the rest of us’.

Chinese culture has undergone tumultuous changes and challenges over the last century. As the Chinese economy expands, as more people have time and money and as the government seeks to capitalise on the creation of a 'cultural nationalism', traditional Chinese culture is seen as a positive force for stabilising society, as a resource for developing the cultural industry, and as an important component in developing a renewed national identity.

A Hundred Years of Solitude (Cien Años the Soledad) by Gabriel García Márquez can be considered a history of Colombia, a synthesis of all Latin American history or even of the whole of humanity. It is a leading example of so-called magic realism which transforms bizarre elements of the imagination into everyday events. The House of the Spirits (La Casa de los Espíritus) by Isabel Allende does the same for another Latin American country. We'll look at how these texts exemplify magic realism and how they are inserted in those countries. It would be ideal if you have read them before we meet.

By the end of 2018 every Australian will have a digital My Health Record, unless they actively choose not to. Almost 6 million people have one already. It means that a summary of a person’s important health information like allergies, current conditions and treatments, medication details, pathology reports or diagnostic imaging reports can be digitally stored in one place. Why have one, who decides what goes on it, and who can see it? Kirsten Beckingham of WA Primary Health Alliance explains.

Quakers are few in number but very active. Over the past few centuries they opposed slavery, campaigned for women's rights, made chocolate instead of alcohol, pioneered modern education (from Hobart to Palestine), argued for justice for Indigenous people (in Fremantle in 1838!), opposed war, helped found Greenpeace, Oxfam and Amnesty, lobbied at the UN, and won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1948. To sustain their faith in action, Quakers insist on stillness in action. Find out how listening to the ‘still small voice within’ can give blessed guidance and how sometimes in cases of emergency the best thing to do might be to sit and listen inwardly.
