Avian intelligence, particularly in corvids (crows, ravens, jays) and parrots has recently been recognized as rivalling that of primates, defying the ‘birdbrain’ stereotype. Birds exhibit advanced cognitive abilities, including complex tool use, casual reasoning, self-awareness and social cognition. Join Birdlife Australia volunteers to discuss the different types of avian intelligence and how they can achieve these advanced cognitive skills despite having smaller brains than primates.

Meet there. Be introduced to the workings of the Bibra Lake Wetlands Centre - we’ll walk through the woodlands, visiting a bird hide and the animal nursery. After morning tea (included) we’ll visit WA Wildlife, learning about the incredible work done by the team of veterinarians, vet nurses and volunteers. Bus trip. Visit the wonderful Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre in the Perth hills, focused on the rescue and rehabilitation of sick and injured black cockatoos. We’ll have a private tour learning about the black cockatoo rehabilitation program and seeing the resident emus, kangaroos and dingoes before concluding inside the interactive aviary with the friendly black cockatoos. After the tour we’ll drive to the re-furbished Gosnells Hotel on Albany Highway for lunch (at own expense). Please be aware that the tour involves a good amount of walking on some uneven terrain. Bus trip/walking tour. Step back in time on the Mount Lawley Heritage Walk, a leisurely stroll through Perth’s coolest, most vibrant and architecturally rich suburb. Enjoy historic residences, community landmarks and the wonderful 1930s Art Deco architecture, and hear about the people, places and events that have shaped the suburb. Coffee to start at Local & Aesthetic and then later relax over lunch at Soho Lane (both at own expense). It will be a relatively easy walk of approximately 1- 2km along Beaufort Street, following the bronze heritage site markers that make up the trail. G. M. ‘Tom’ Bunning helped to drive the rise of Bunnings as one of the great successes of Western Australian private enterprise and a household name nationwide. The youngest son of the company’s founder, Tom joined Bunnings on the eve of the Great Depression and remained throughout the long post-war boom, before laying the foundations for the eventual takeover of Bunnings by Wesfarmers in 1991. Joseph Christenson is the author of a new biography, Not Just a Bunnings Man: The Life and Times of ‘Tom’ (G.M) Bunnings.
