Our story begins with the emigration of the Peterson family from Sweden to Fremantle in 1891, where Franz Peterson acquired and built a cottage on 42 Glyde St in which to raise he and his wife Maria’s seven children. Since 1940 when it was sold by the Peterson family, Number 42 has had six owners, the last of which was the Town of East Fremantle who in 1981 ‘loaned’ it to the fledgling Glyde-In Community Learning Centre. With John’s knowledge of his ancestor Franz and the early history of the Peterson family, and Jono’s knowledge of all things Glyde-In, you’ll be full bottle on the history of this little patch of Glyde St that we hold dear!

With a tiny population, at the edge of the world, the inhospitable ice-sheets of Greenland are often beyond most people's thoughts. This year, Greenland has been thrust into the popular consciousness due to the particular interest of the current American President in annexing the territory to the United States. In an attempt to understand the context of current events, historian David has engaged in a research journey to understand more about Greenland, its people and its history, and in doing so found stories of Greenland's past as dramatic as its landscape. These episodes from Greenland's history will shed some light on the deep history of Greenland's relationship with the world, and perhaps its future direction.

4 Mondays. For many centuries sorcerers of Egypt and Babylonia were consulted to predict the future and repel evil. In 1628, Pope Urban VIII, fearing that a coming eclipse portended his death, called upon friar Tomasso Campanella who, through a magical ritual, allayed his fears. Magic existed as a systemic spiritual practice through the 18th and 19th centuries, despite some hostility. The Golden Dawn, a British society founded in 1888, had a strong influence on magic and esoteric thought in the English-speaking world. Come and tell us your experience with magic!

NOTE CHANGE FROM SCHEDULED DATE. Malta and Gozo are two tiny islands sitting just off the coast of Sicily between Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Located strategically at the crossroads of civilisations for thousands of years, they have one of the richest and most interesting histories in the Mediterranean. They have hosted the Romans, Arabs, Knights of St. John, Napoleon and the British Empire, each of which has left its mark. Jane will explore the intertwined histories of Malta and Gozo, and touch briefly on the evolution of their distinct island identities.

Are you interested in understanding the political drivers underpinning international negotiations? Ongoing negotiations within the UN and other International Agencies affect the development and implementation of standards, guidelines, human and labour rights, food safety and new policy thinking that can impact upon social, environment, health, economic and security agendas. Former ambassador and multilateral negotiator Anna George will discuss the importance of being able to read the underlying dynamics, tease out the politically sensitive points of difference not generally aired in normal public discourse, and understand the diplomatic clout attached to these positions.

The first European settlers to arrive in WA confronted a species-rich, virtually unknown, diverse flora. James Drummond arrived in the ‘Parmelia’ in 1829 and played a key role in the development of agriculture and horticulture in the Colony. It took more than ten years for his fellow colonists to accept his observations that native poisonous plants were the cause of death of valued animal stock. Drummond became an indefatigable collector of south western plant species and seeds, making the incredible south west flora globally respected. Prior to his retirement Dr Neville Marchant was Head of the WA herbarium.

You’ll learn why we won’t find a stegosaurus fossil in our backyard, why our rivers are too small for their valleys and have – in some cases – turned upside down! – and consider how this history leaves us with a legacy of extraordinary biodiversity, fragility and beauty.

4 Mondays. Most people think that witches are similar to ghosts or fairies. Modernity has relegated them to cartoons or sanitised figures such as Sabrina. However, witches and its relative Neopaganism are real, but not as in the stereotypes appearing on TV programs. Indeed, Witchcraft and Neopaganism are the fastest-growing religions in the USA, and their adherents include academics, artists, and professionals, as well as ordinary people. And contrary to popular belief, witches can be men as well as women. Let’s explore and recognise our inner witches!
