Many of us have heard of the great warrior Genghis (Chinggis) Khan, renowned for unifying the disparate tribes of the steppes into a powerful empire that once stretched across most of Eurasia. But what do we actually know about the Mongolian Empire, or modern day Mongolia? If you are interested in learning a little more about the history, arts, culture and environment of this surprising country, this talk will whet your appetite. It will cover a range of seemingly unrelated topics, such as the truth about the Mongolian horse, the significance of a 'zud', the country's national Naadam Festival, the impact of pollution and climate change, and why there are state-sponsored opera and ballet companies. Come and hear how the pieces fit together.
