Moscow-Beijing relations have reached their 'highest level in history', Russian President Vladimir Putin said very recently. The close ties are based in part on the leaders' shared identities as autocrats who repress all political opposition. They also have closely aligned foreign policies, and both want to restrain US influence in Asia. An alliance between the two countries would have a massive impact on the Indo-Pacific region and for Australian security. Alexei Muraviev heads the National Security and Strategic Studies at Curtin University.
