Ben Prior was born in Kent in 1902. In 1923 he left the UK on the SS Ballarat, and arrived in Fremantle with seven pounds to his name. Within ten years, having worked in many towns, he moved with his wife and young family to Coolgardie. He bought several properties and businesses in Bayley Street and established a museum, now known as the Ben Prior's Open Air Museum. Ben was later awarded an MBE for his services to Coolgardie. Nancy has written Ben's Black Gold, the story of her dad's life.
